Faf du Plessis is still uncertain for the Lord’s Test against England, a Cricket South Africa spokesperson confirmed on Friday (June 30). Du Plessis flew back home for the birth of his first child but will stay back in South Africa after a difficult birth.
“Although Faf’s baby has been born, it is still uncertain he will be back in time for the first Test. It was a difficult birth and he will only fly back to the UK once the baby and mom are settled,” the spokesperson said.
Du Plessis absence isn’t the only concern for the think-tank. Vernon Philander is in a race against time to recover from an ankle injury. They’ve also called in Chris Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo as cover.
South Africa have lost the preceding One-Day International and Twenty20 International and will look to win the Test series after a disappointing show in the limited-overs format and the ICC Champions Trophy.
